A funny story from my Zombie Day

Here's a funny story from last night. I don't share many funny stories these days. (Telling stories about talking to myself would be pretty odd, and I haven't gotten out much lately.) It was a highlight from a day I will refer to as my Zombie Day. In class (these kids just started 3rd and 4th grade) I was asking them about Mephibosheth who we had talked about before. Strangely several times before in the weeks I have taught. After talking about who he was,  I asked, "What was wrong with him?" "He had a really long and weird name?" I said, "Fine, I'll call him Phibby..." (We're big on nicknames in class.) That, however, didn't move us along. "No, it wasn't weird back then anyway. What couldn't he do?" Finally, after trying to herd the cats, I get the answer, "Walk." OK. "Why couldn't he walk?" One of the kids answered in what sounded a bit like Forrest Gump in phrasing and delivery,...

Coming alongside the teens in your life

Image
Intentionally Loving Teenagers with the Gospel Now more than ever, teenagers need parents and youth leaders to share  their own lives, pursue them, and present the gospel in a relational way.  In today’s instant gratification world obsessed with curating the perfect online presence to gain followers and likes, teenagers are more isolated and lonelier than ever. Middle and high school kids are longing to be chased, seen, and loved—and the gospel is the only answer to their questions, hurt, and desire for belonging. Unfortunately, parents and youth ministry leaders in the lives of young adults are missing opportunities not only to share the gospel with teenagers but to share their very lives as well. In this pivotal developmental time for teens, Christian communities neglect to care for them well, and too often, youth ministries and parents focus on behavioral change rather than heart change. In Alongside: Loving Teenagers with the Gospel (New Growth Press/Augus...

A Saturday escape

I have been holed up in my house a lot lately, even on the weekends. So, instead of getting in the craft room, I felt the need to go on a shopping excursion. Two goals: Clothes and an L-shaped desk so I'll have one piece of furniture instead of three or four and be able to better set up the mission control that is my current desk, especially since it's where I spend most of my waking hours. It's a good thing my first stop (which I expected to be the least productive one) was the best one. I loaded up on new shirts because I never go shopping and need new ones, if even just for video conferences. I am told on the new conference screen my head is two foot by three foot. Everything I have is pathetic. I bought everything I tried on, ten in all! I also got a couple of pairs of shoes. Not exactly what I set out for, but they will work. Then, a trip to Ikea was an absolute waste. My mom bought a 99 cent trash can and I bought some bag clips (think for chips and such) for ...
