Who Did Swallow Jonah?

Image
These guys sure have grown in the past couple of years. I haven't had a big group lately, but I'm going to make them do at least one video before promotion at the end of summer. I'm not sure how the group is going to shift based on how many kids are in which age group. I may have the same problem next school year! Right now there is only one kid who really likes to sing. Oh, she loves to sing. Loves to sing. Anyone in the auditorium on any given Sunday knows that. She needs a little reigning in though. ;) Who Did Swallow Jonah? Who did? Who did? Who did? Who did? Who did swallow Jo-Jo-Jonah? Who did? Who did? Who did? Who did? Who did swallow Jo-Jo-Jonah? Who did? Who did? Who did? Who did? Who did swallow Jo-Jo-Jonah? Who did swallow Jonah? Who did swallow Jonah? Who did swallow Jonah… Up? The whale did. The whale did. x2 The whale did swallow Jo-Jo-Jonah The whale did. The whale did. x2 The whale did swallow Jo-Jo-Jonah The whale...

(Girls) I want to be like Ruth.

Thriving in Babylon by Larry Osborne

Meet a man forced to live in a fast-changing and godless society, where he faced fears about the future, concern for his safety, and the discouragement of world that seemed to be falling apart at warp speed in Larry Osborne’s  Thriving in Babylon .  Daniel, with the power of hope, humility, and wisdom, not only thrived, he changed an empire while he was at it. Does Christianity have a place in today’s world?

Image
Professor and seasoned debater brings important discussion about God and the public square The concepts of tolerance and political correctness are having a chilling effect on the public practice of Christianity. That’s why readers will find Dr. John C. Lennox’s new book Against the Flow: The Inspiration of Daniel in an Age of Relativism (Monarch Books/March 27, 2015/ISBN: 978-0857216212/$19.99) incredibly timely . Lennox, who has defended the Christian faith in debates against the likes of Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, gives every follower of Christ the intellectual foundation they will need to argue the role their faith should have in the public discourse.  While anyone who has spent time in a Sunday-school classroom is familiar with the biblical story of Daniel, Lennox mines this classic historical account to encourage cultural bravery in Christians trying to find their place in a postmodern society. The story of these four young men born in the tiny st...

Their last day as 5th graders

Image
Today marked the last Sunday for my 5th graders before promotion to Jr. High. They start school tomorrow. And yet, they randomly spouted this song this morning singing the opposite parts. I turned the video on, and a couple of the boys that had been singing the Ruth part refused to do it for the camera. I was so entertained. Really, I was. Seriously.

Daniel was a mighty man?

Image
At church the kids sometimes sing this song: Boys: Girls: I want to be like Daniel. I want to be like Ruth. I want to be like Daniel. I want to be like Ruth. For Ruth was so, so sweet and kind. And Daniel was a mighty man.  I want to be like Daniel. I want to be like Ruth. This song is not among my favorites because: A) We sing it too often and need variety. B) I hate the voices Sam uses to sing it. (Sorry Sam) It makes Ruth sound sissy and really, what's the need for that deep "mighty man" thing? And the muscle thing? C) As Rachel and I discussed, the point of Ruth's story is not that she was sweet and kind - she was loyal and chose to follow God. And while Daniel was mighty spiritually, the point of learning about Daniel is about his faithfulness.  The two of us are also very troubled by the lack of basic Bible knowledge that the the kids who are there every Sunday have about the major figures in the Bible. Or they have their ...
