Ring of Fire

Image
This week's video comes from VBS this past week. I taught about Elisha where an army of fire surrounded and protected God's people from the Syrians. Cue my idea to re-write the words of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire."  It's in middle of the video here.  RING OF FIRE Fear is awful thing, You can be scared of most anything. Fear is a big fat liar, Throw that fear in a ring of fire. Throw your fears in a burnin’ ring of fire. Send them down, down, down, As your prayers go higher. Let them burn, burn, burn, In the ring of fire, in the ring of fire. Throw your fears in a burnin’ ring of fire. Send them down, down, down, As your prayers go higher. Let them burn, burn, burn, In the ring of fire, in the ring of fire. Elisha’s servant was really scared, But he served a God who really cared. Elisha said, close your eyes, Open and see the good guys. Syrians went down in a burnin’ ring of fire. T...

American Christian Warrior

Image
Our VBS at Westhill Church of Christ this week was "American Christian Warrior" themed. (Think an offshoot of "American Ninja Warrior." Here's a quick glimpse of the week. I taught Tuesday and will share "Ring of Fire" night this weekend.

Since I only taught on Monday night at Westhill 's VBS, I took pictures the other nights for the Facebook Page . I also videoed one of the class/skit sessions every night. I do promise to get those uploaded to share.  These shots are from the craft room, the intro skits in the auditorium and the Job, Moses and Peter lessons.

Poor, mistreated Joseph

Image
This week is VBS at Westhill , and last night was my night to teach. Our theme was superheroes overcoming certain challenges, and my lessons centered on Joseph overcoming mistreatment. I usually don't have a big cast because depending on actors makes me nervous, but these guys did a great job. I only had 7 of Joseph's 11 brothers, but no one actually pointed that out. I kept talking about the 10 mean older brothers.  If I had my script together more than a week ahead - because I run behind on absolutely everything - I probably could have found a few more.  All the lessons were videoed, so I'm going to try to get them uploaded to share. I have to do it when I'm not trying to work because they will take FOREVER, and I can't function while videos are uploading.  Here's my cast with a kid hiding in middle for a picture. Keep scrolling for the picture of the brothers throwing Joseph into the well one more time, just for the fun of it. Between rehearsals ...

My ambitious project of the week

Image
Hopefully, by the end of next week, this will resemble a dinosaur skeleton. I traced off the pattern from the VBS material and have a styrofoam cutter on the way to be able to cut it. Dad didn't think he had time to do it out of plywood, so it's up to me out of styrofoam. The lines on the old overhead were so blown out I had very hard time tracing notches, so I am not sure it's going to piece together real well. Plus the styrofoam is thicker than the wood was going to be, so the notches will all have to be measured and cut. I know this probably makes very little sense. I promise to post a picture next Friday if I get it together.

It's amazing what kids will do if you promise them a prize

Image
Tonight was the last night of Vacation Bible School, and I promised prizes to the leaders of our scoreboard. I don't have a picture of the final totals - I still have it up in the room. Maybe I'll remember to take a picture Sunday. Each child had one of the paper plates with their name on the board. The theme was a race, so various activities added points to your score like a track meet. 1 point   Each day you were there 2 points  Bringing your Bible (per day) 2 points  Bringing a friend (per friend per day) 3 points  Bringing back completed homework given out the night before (it was super easy - just took responsibility to remember it) 3 points  Remembering a memory verse (I gave them a list the first day of all the lessons we were doing for the three days, the main theme verse and two extra for the days we weren't doing. You could get 18 total.) I've done this before just doing 1 point for each item. When we had a pirate theme, I gave gold c...

Putting Paige to work

Image
This is the other reason I was ready for a three day weekend. Between work and going to softball games, I had been trying to cram getting ready for VBS into my schedule. I usually plan better, but this year became a last minute thing. I had told Paige we would try to go to a movie since she was planning on coming over tonight, but we aren't sure what was showing. The movie theater sold from one company to another, and they haven't gotten their act together with the Flixster app or other search functions. Then, as a back-up, she wanted to play canasta. Scratch that too! After installing my new freezer (so I can buy more than one frozen pizza at a time), going shopping for Peyton's birthday, looking for silver or gold poster board, buying a few groceries, and cooking dinner, I needed to finish a few more things for VBS. So, I put Paige to work. Here she's making a relay baton from a paper towel roll and crepe paper. Love it!

What happens when you only have 15 minutes

Image
Our class was shortened to 15 minutes today, so I was trying to pick a song they knew. We've done "Deep and Wide" for the video before, but I needed help coming up with something quick. This was quite entertaining to me. We tried "Blue Skies and Rainbows" and made it through one verse. I told them next week (if I remember), we needed to work on the three other verses.

Some children are better actors than others Part 2

Image
At VBS this week, I took pictures so that each child in my class could have a take home picture frame. In the first picture I took, I told the kids to smile. In the other, I told them to act scared that there was a lion right behind them. Some need some acting classes. Others, including one related to me and her cousin had no problems whatsoever. This is the second half of the 21 kids that made it at least one night to the 3rd and 4th grade class. And a bonus... Chloe, Paige's friend who also wanted her picture made.
