Peter faced his fear

Image
This week I am posting videos from last week's Vacation Bible School. Our theme was about super heroes and how they often have to overcome a weakness in order to be a hero. The Bible tells of heroes too. Our final night took a look at Peter and how he let his fear get the better of him.

God wouldn't let Moses keep making excuses

Joseph overcame being mistreated

Since I only taught on Monday night at Westhill 's VBS, I took pictures the other nights for the Facebook Page . I also videoed one of the class/skit sessions every night. I do promise to get those uploaded to share.  These shots are from the craft room, the intro skits in the auditorium and the Job, Moses and Peter lessons.

Poor, mistreated Joseph

This week is VBS at Westhill , and last night was my night to teach. Our theme was superheroes overcoming certain challenges, and my lessons centered on Joseph overcoming mistreatment. I usually don't have a big cast because depending on actors makes me nervous, but these guys did a great job. I only had 7 of Joseph's 11 brothers, but no one actually pointed that out. I kept talking about the 10 mean older brothers.  If I had my script together more than a week ahead - because I run behind on absolutely everything - I probably could have found a few more.  All the lessons were videoed, so I'm going to try to get them uploaded to share. I have to do it when I'm not trying to work because they will take FOREVER, and I can't function while videos are uploading.  Here's my cast with a kid hiding in middle for a picture. Keep scrolling for the picture of the brothers throwing Joseph into the well one more time, just for the fun of it. Between rehearsals ...

Anger breeds creativity breeds...

Originally, I had planned to keep the room that my friend Rachel and I had decorated for Vacation Bible School to stay decorated through summer and into the fall. The kids really liked it, and I had talked with all the teachers I'm going to be in a rotation with about keeping it up when started the new quarter. I'll keep the next part of the story short. Half of the room got un-decorated and I didn't take it well. I was bothered that the work I put in was largely disregarded and certainly unappreciated when there was no reason for what was on the walls to bother anyone. So, wound up from those decorations having fizzled, I decided with the new quarter being focused on starting an Old Testament study, I'd just redo it all. One section of the room can focus on creation and the Garden of Eden. I can put up a big ark. Eventually, we can have a Red Sea out in the hall that leads to my classroom and Rachel's across the hall. A tabernacle... walls of Jericho. My idea...

It's amazing what kids will do if you promise them a prize

Image
Tonight was the last night of Vacation Bible School, and I promised prizes to the leaders of our scoreboard. I don't have a picture of the final totals - I still have it up in the room. Maybe I'll remember to take a picture Sunday. Each child had one of the paper plates with their name on the board. The theme was a race, so various activities added points to your score like a track meet. 1 point   Each day you were there 2 points  Bringing your Bible (per day) 2 points  Bringing a friend (per friend per day) 3 points  Bringing back completed homework given out the night before (it was super easy - just took responsibility to remember it) 3 points  Remembering a memory verse (I gave them a list the first day of all the lessons we were doing for the three days, the main theme verse and two extra for the days we weren't doing. You could get 18 total.) I've done this before just doing 1 point for each item. When we had a pirate theme, I gave gold c...

Putting Paige to work

Image
This is the other reason I was ready for a three day weekend. Between work and going to softball games, I had been trying to cram getting ready for VBS into my schedule. I usually plan better, but this year became a last minute thing. I had told Paige we would try to go to a movie since she was planning on coming over tonight, but we aren't sure what was showing. The movie theater sold from one company to another, and they haven't gotten their act together with the Flixster app or other search functions. Then, as a back-up, she wanted to play canasta. Scratch that too! After installing my new freezer (so I can buy more than one frozen pizza at a time), going shopping for Peyton's birthday, looking for silver or gold poster board, buying a few groceries, and cooking dinner, I needed to finish a few more things for VBS. So, I put Paige to work. Here she's making a relay baton from a paper towel roll and crepe paper. Love it!

The race is on and my VBS room is ready

Image
Before and after softball games this week (Peyton has been in a tournament), with Rachel's help, I've gotten my room ready for Vacation Bible School. The black band around the room is supposed to be a running track with the stripes drawn in. There are red, white and blue stars as well as gold, silver, and bronze medals. It turned out pretty well. With it all done, I don't have to work on it over the weekend.

Some children are better actors than others Part 2

Image
At VBS this week, I took pictures so that each child in my class could have a take home picture frame. In the first picture I took, I told the kids to smile. In the other, I told them to act scared that there was a lion right behind them. Some need some acting classes. Others, including one related to me and her cousin had no problems whatsoever. This is the second half of the 21 kids that made it at least one night to the 3rd and 4th grade class. And a bonus... Chloe, Paige's friend who also wanted her picture made.
